A unique Medical English Program for medical professionals
How is medical English different from ordinary English? Many people who are not involved in medical English (and unfortunately some who are) think that medical English just means medical terminology. There is a lot more to it than just that!
Terminology is very important, but it is just the starting point. You have to know the terms to talk to other professionals, but much of your time is spent talking to patients who don't know medical terminology. With patients you need to be able to explain medical conditions and procedures in language they understand. It has to be simple enough for them, but it still has to be medically accurate.
Then there is the cultural aspect of dealing with both colleagues and patients. In an English speaking hospital, when should you be very respectful and when would a joke help to get things done? How do you instruct and help a patient get through a very undignified procedure?
Medicine is based on science, but we are constantly reminded that human communication can have an enormous effect on how that science helps a patient cope with a medical condition.
Using Medical English We always try to find ways that our students can experience the use of medical English in a real medical setting. In the school we do realistic role plays which mimic what would be encountered in a hospital or clinic.
For interested students We will arrange a working experience in the medical field. This would typically be an unpaid position and would usually involve "shadowing" a Canadian medical professional as they went about their work. There is no charge to registered full-time students for this service.
There are many opportunities for volunteer work in medically related organizations and while the student may not be able to work exactly in their own specialty, the interaction of working with medical professionals in a Canadian medical context can provide excellent experience and a great opportunity to practice the English skills learned in the classroom.
Students who want to do a medical internship in a hospital in Canada, are required by law to pass both the Canadian and local medical/nursing exams or an exam that is related to the students field of expertise. This can be a lengthy procedure and we will try to help students with this on a case by case basis.
We also try to connect our students with Canadian professionals in their field for discussion and observation and for social occasions.
This is an ESL course which teaches speaking, listening, reading and writing. It uses health care related topics
and role plays to practice everyday English. It is more of a general English course than the Core Medical English Program
which is truly concentrated on "Medical English" and is intended specifically for medical professionals.
There is a maximum of 6 students per class so that each student has plenty of opportunity to speak and
interact with the teacher. This number will be reduced to 4 students per class when the student moves on to the Core Medical English Program
This course is best for students who are at an upper beginner or lower intermediate level
The course is designed to complement the learning process that is natural to most people.
We find that 3 hours of intense learning is about the most that an average person can usefully absorb in a day.
The rest of the day can be spent most beneficially doing exercises designed to reinforce the learned material.
This is accomplished in the companion course, Practicing Medical English.
The Core course is concentrated and meant to get the material into the students head, the companion course Practicing Medical English keeps it there.
The course is ongoing on a four month rotating basis. All components of the course will be taught every month
but the content will not repeat itself until the fifth month. This means that a student can enter the course
at any time, and can choose a one, two, three or four month intensive course. Students completing the full
four-month program will give graduating presentations and receive a diploma.

We recommend that students take the full program of 30 hours a week which includes 15 hours of intensive
classroom learning (Core Medical English Immersion) and another 15 hours of Medical English reinforcement
(Practicing Medical English) which include use of the language laboratory, shadowing (observing) of medical
professionals, conversation and pronunciation classes. However, we will try to accommodate students
that wish to take only one course at a time.
Students completing the full four-month program will give graduating presentations and receive a diploma.

Practicing Medical English Course
This course is intended to be taken with the Core Medical English Course. It is designed to reinforce the material learned in that course.

Practicing Medical English is not as intense as Core Medical English but it is calculated to help the student commit the Core material to long-term memory. This is done by using the material learned in the Core course.
The two courses are coordinated so that the same material that is being taught in the Core course is being reinforced in this course. The fact that there is a maximum of 4 students in the class assures the students that they have ample class time to use what they have learned.
Like the Core course Practicing Medical English is ongoing on a four month rotating basis. All components of the course will be taught every month but the content will not repeat itself until the fifth month. This means that a student can enter the course at any time, and can choose a one, two, three or four month course.
The program is 15 hours a week and includes 15 hours of learning which include use of the language laboratory, shadowing of medical professionals, conversation and pronunciation classes.
